Ducks on the pond: Northern Pintail

Here are a few ducks near Boot Lake.

Looking at the Field Guide to Birds of the Mackenzie Delta, I believe the bird on the right is a Northern Pintail; a migratory bird known for its bright blue beak.

  1. Nope, those are all Scaup, I think. Two drakes and a hen. Defintely not pintail. Drake pintail have a partly blue bill, but it’s usually very pale.

  2. I’m more inclined to think it’s a scaup. The one on the left certainly is. Pintails are lighter gray than scaups and have a really long tail.
